Do they know
what they know?

I study how AI systems understand their own uncertainty and limitations, and how that changes what they do next.

MAPPING / BELIEVING / CORRECTING

From knowing
to doing.

When does information about an AI system’s own situation become useful knowledge for action?

That question connects my interests in internal reasoning, self-modelling and autonomous agents. These are the questions guiding my doctoral research.

01

What happens inside a model while it reasons?

INTERNAL REASONING+

I’m interested in how intermediate computations relate to what a model knows, where it is uncertain, and the explanation it eventually gives.

THE QUESTIONWhich internal signals track knowledge or uncertainty, and when does an explanation fail to reflect the computation behind it?

02

How does a system understand its own situation?

SELF-MODELLING+

A useful self-model could include knowledge, uncertainty, capabilities, available tools and a record of what the system has already done.

THE QUESTIONDoes this information remain accurate as circumstances change, and does it need to be represented as one integrated model?

03

Does self-knowledge actually change decisions?

ACTION & UNCERTAINTY+

The test is behavioural: whether information about a system’s limitations changes when it answers, checks its work or asks for help.

THE QUESTIONWhat changes when decisions use self-relevant information, once errors, extra tool calls and deferred work are taken into account?

04

What changes when the system becomes an agent?

AGENTIC AI+

Agents act on the world. Their actions change what they know and what they can do next. This is where my project work meets my doctoral interests.

THE QUESTIONHow should an agent update its account of its capabilities and past actions when observations no longer match its assumptions?

The control room above is a visual exploration of these themes. It is separate from my research findings.

In progress,
in practice.

Diesel Mears

I’m a PhD student and Graduate Research Fellow at The Cyprus Institute, supervised by Professor Constantine Dovrolis. I hold an MSc in Data Science, Technology and Innovation from the University of Edinburgh. Originally from the UK, I’m now based in Cyprus.

My interests sit where language models meet autonomous agents: internal reasoning, uncertainty, and the knowledge a system needs about itself to act well.
